Sue Klebold, Mother of Columbine Shooter, Speaks Out

April 2019 will make 20 years since the Columbine High School Shooting.

Where are we as a nation?

I was honored to be able to photograph Sue Klebold’s visit to Dallas, Texas. Mental Health America of Greater Dallas welcomed her along with a host of many other readers of her book. As a founder of One Belief organization it is always upon my heart to understand the intricate details of matters of mental and emotional health.

Upon my arrival to the engagement people sat waiting to hear the words of Sue. Shortly past 6:00 pm introductions were made from the president and the event coordinator for the event hosted by Mental Health America of Greater Dallas and shortly there after Sue walked up. She stood at the podium and she first told us the hardest part of everything is everyone always asks “ How could you NOT know ?” “How could you not know your child was suffering from a mental illness?”

I can’t begin to tell you how as an educator and a mentor that touched me to my core! I looked around the room… it was full but so many more people need to make an effort to invest in their mental health, each seat is so important to ones mental health and education there of. As a society we shame people for saying something is wrong with us. Hurt people hurt people, when people are suffering from depression and are having suicidal thoughts their emotional intelligence is out of place. The process to make sound decisions is not present.

Sue explained some of her son’s interests and walked us through the last year up to the last week of her son’s life. She also spoke about how to the world these young men were betrayed as monsters and the families were blamed. Looking at the good student her son was and his interest there was no true way of knowing at the time he was suffering from an illness. From the surface there’s no easy test or way of knowing that some one has a mental illness, you actually have to go see someone Sue encouraged everyone to invest in their mental health, go talk to a therapist, counselor,
