Mental health is a complicated topic, but here are some things that can help you be aware of what’s going on with your mental health and to others that surround you.

In Nationwide stats, almost one in five people (47.1 million) in the U.S are living with a mental health condition. Numbers have increased by about 1.5 million over the last year’s report. It is also reported that about 10% of youth in the U.S have been experiencing severe depression.

A growing percentage of youth in the U.S. live with major depression.

Depression is a major depressive disorder that causes serious medical mental illness. It negatively affects the way you think, causing a negative feeling that affects how you act. 

A growing percentage of youth in the U.S. live with major depression. 15.08% of youth experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, a 1.24% increase from last year’s dataset. In the bottom-ranked states, up to 19% of youth ages 12-17 experienced major depression.  

Around 10 million people suffer from a mental illness that severely interferes with their daily life activities.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that 43.8 million adults in the United States experience mental illness annually. Sadly, half of these numbers are untreated with their mental health, leaving adults and children suffering from untreated symptoms. 


Research shows that 59.6% of the youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment. In Texas – 64.7% of Texans aged 12-17 did not receive any care in the last year.

It is important that you educate yourself about mental illness and how to work towards ending the stigma surrounding it. Mental illness is scaringly common, but sometimes it can feel like a taboo topic that no one should talk about — however, there are plenty of ways to bring the conversation forward and help educate others who have not been exposed to it before.
